A jamb is the upright post that forms the side of a door or a window. A door frame has two jambs, one on each side; the door’s hinges are fixed to one of them. The piece across the top is not the jamb. The word looks as if it should end with a b sound, but it is pronounced just like jam — the b is silent. It came into English from French jambe, meaning “leg”: the side posts are like the legs of the opening. That French word goes back to Late Latin gamba (a leg or hock) and further to a Greek word for a bend. So the picture is “the legs of the door,” not anything to do with fruit jam.
