Doing is the act of 'do' turned into a thing you can point at — the having-done-it. When you ask whose doing this was, you're pointing back to the hand behind it. From there it stretches two ways: the effort a doing takes ('take some doing'), and the whole bundle of things a person is busy doing ('doings').
