A documentarist is someone whose job is to make documentaries — films about real people, real places, and real problems, usually with real footage rather than actors. You will also hear documentarian, which means the same thing and is more common in American English; documentarist turns up more in some British and academic writing. Neither word is everyday. Most people just say documentary filmmaker. The job is not the same as a news reporter's: a reporter hurries to tell what happened today; a documentarist may follow one story for months or years. Though actually, the line can blur when a documentary is made for nightly television. This is also not an office word for someone who files papers, even though document sits inside it.
