    Doctrinaire describes a person — or a way of thinking — that is sure its beliefs are right and will not change them, even when the facts get messy. It is not a kind word. You use it when someone treats a doctrine (a set of ideas they hold like a rulebook) as more real than the world in front of them. A doctrinaire teacher may keep a method after it has clearly failed; a doctrinaire politician may refuse a useful compromise because it is not 'pure'. It can also name the person: a doctrinaire. The word is formal, a little old-fashioned, and slightly sharp. Younger speakers might just say stubborn, or say someone is stuck in an ideology. Though actually, stubborn can be about anything — bedtime, food, a sports team. Doctrinaire is stubborn about ideas. You will meet it in newspapers and essays more than in chat.
