    A dockyard is a place where ships are repaired or built — docks, workshops, cranes, and dry places where a ship can sit out of the water. It is close to shipyard, and people often use shipyard for the same idea. Though actually dockyard, especially in British English, often suggests a large, sometimes naval, yard: the kind of place that serves a navy or a big commercial fleet, not a small boat shed. You take a damaged ship into the dockyard; workers there cut, weld, and paint. It is a workplace, not the public edge of the port (that is the ) and not the wider neighbourhood ().
