Dixieland is a kind of traditional jazz, the early New Orleans style with a trumpet (or cornet), clarinet, and trombone weaving round a tune together, usually with piano, banjo or guitar, bass or tuba, and drums. It is lively, often cheerful, and built on collective playing rather than one long solo after another. People also call it traditional jazz. The name comes from Dixie, the old nickname for the American South, plus land; the music grew up there, especially in New Orleans, in the early 1900s, and later revival bands kept the name. It is not all Southern music, and it is not country. Though actually, Dixieland can also mean the place itself; this entry is the music.
