Dixie is an old nickname for the southern states of the US, especially the ones that broke away and fought the North in the Civil War (the ). It is not an official name on the map; it is a song-and-story name. You meet it in the song “Dixie,” in phrases like “the heart of Dixie,” and in the saying whistling Dixie, meaning you are talking as if something nice were true when it is not. It can sound warm and homey to some Americans and loaded to others, because that “old South” was built on slavery. Many people now just say the South. It is old-fashioned in careful writing. (A different word dixie means a kind of cooking pot — not this sense.)
組成First written down in 1859. The true source is not known. It may come from the Mason-Dixon line, the old boundary people used to mark North from South, or from dixie, slang for a Louisiana ten-dollar note, from French dix, “ten.”
