If a number is divisible by another number, you can split the first into equal whole-number groups of the second, with nothing left over. Twelve is divisible by three because 12 ÷ 3 = 4 exactly. That classroom use is the one you will meet most. More loosely, anything you can cut into parts can be called divisible — lawyers sometimes talk of property that is divisible — but everyday English does not use the word much outside maths. The useful opposite is: not divisible, or “it leaves a remainder.”

組成From Middle English divisible, from Old French, from Late Latin divisibilis, from the Latin verb divido (“divide”). The ending means “able to be.” Way back, that verb sits on an ancient word for “two.”
