    Diversionary describes something done to pull someone’s attention away from the real thing. A diversionary attack in war is a smaller or fake attack so the enemy looks the wrong way. In talk and , diversionary tactics change the subject so the hard question is not asked. It is a fairly formal, planning kind of word — newspapers, history, strategy — not a playground word. Though actually, a diversion can also mean a fun sidetrack or a pleasant activity, but diversionary almost always means “meant to distract,” not “meant to entertain.”
