Dissection is the careful cutting open of a dead body, animal, or sometimes a plant, to study its parts — a common part of biology class, where students might dissect a frog to see its organs. The word is also used more broadly for a very detailed examination of something like an idea, argument, or piece of writing — 'a dissection of the speech' means picking it apart piece by piece to analyze it.
