When two things should sit next to each other in a fair or matching way — in size, amount, strength, or importance — but they do not, that situation is a disproportion. One side is too big, too small, too heavy, or too light compared with the other. The word is rather formal. You will see it in news, reports, and careful writing more than in chat. People use it about money (a disproportion between what bosses earn and what workers earn), about punishment (the pain does not match the crime), or about attention (too much time on one small thing). Though actually, in ordinary talk many speakers never use this noun at all; they say the same idea with a phrase: “out of proportion” or “not in proportion”. There is a rare verb, to disproportion something, meaning to make it uneven, but you will almost never hear it.
