If something is dispensable, you can do without it. It is not really needed, so people can drop it, cut it, or let it go without much trouble. We use it for extra tools, extra meetings, extra steps in a plan — the bits you can lose and still be fine. People use it for jobs and even for workers too, though that is a cold, office way of talking: it means the company could lose that person and keep going. The word is a little formal. In everyday talk many people just say "we don't really need this." Though actually, you will meet the opposite, , far more often, and that is the one students mix up with this: means you cannot do without it. Dispensable is the one you can drop.
