A dispatcher is the person whose job is to send vehicles out to the places that need them — taxis, ambulances, fire engines, delivery vans, sometimes police cars. They take the call, see who is free, and send the right one. They usually stay in a room with screens and radios; they are not the driver. The word is very common in American English as a job title. British English sometimes says controller in emergency work, though dispatcher is widely understood. Though actually, in films you almost always hear dispatcher for the person who answers the urgent call and sends help.
