A disparaging remark, look, or comment puts a person or thing down. You are not only saying something is weak; you are showing, in the way you talk, that you do not think much of it. It often feels quiet and a little above the other person, not like shouting. Newspapers, reviews, and careful speech like this word; in everyday talk people more often say someone was being mean, rude, or looking down on someone. Though actually, a disparaging joke can still hurt, because the laugh is part of the put-down. You will meet it most as disparaging + remark / comment / tone / look.
