Disparagement is the talk, or the act, of making someone or something sound less good or less important than they are. It is the noun that sits on disparage: not the person, the remarks — or the habit of making them. You might hear it in formal writing, school essays, or complaints: this is disparagement, not honest criticism. Honest criticism points at a real problem and still leaves the person standing. Disparagement pushes the person or the work down. Though actually, everyday English often skips this long noun and just uses the verb, or says put-downs. When the noun does appear, the speaker is usually being careful, a bit school-like or law-like.
