A disinfectant is a chemical or cleaning product that destroys bacteria and other tiny living things that can make you ill — on surfaces, not usually inside the body. You put it on tables, floors, toilets, kitchen tools, and sometimes on a wound of a certain kind. Though actually, people mix it up with antiseptic: antiseptic is more for skin; disinfectant is more for things and rooms. Soap mostly washes dirt off; disinfectant is meant to kill . Household bleach, alcohol wipes, and many kitchen sprays count. The word can also describe the product: a disinfectant spray. It is an ordinary, practical word, not a fancy one.
組成disinfect (to kill germs on something) + -ant (a thing that does that). English borrowed this shape from French désinfectant.
