If you are disheartened, you feel disappointed in a heavy way: hope has dropped, and you do not feel like continuing. This is how a person feels, not how a thing is. A closed door, a failed test, months of looking with no answer — those can leave you disheartened. It is a little more written than fed up or down, but people do say it in speech. Though actually, you can be disheartened and still keep going; the word names the feeling, not a final decision to stop. It does not mean you have no heart (that would be ), and it does not mean you are (hurt in love). It is the -ed form of the verb: something you, and then you are disheartened.
