Discriminatory means treating a person or a group differently from other people, in an unfair way. A discriminatory rule, joke, or hiring practice shuts people out or puts them down because of who they are: race, sex, age, religion, and so on. News, law, and school policy use this word a lot. It is strong and formal. Though actually, it is not a fancy twin of discriminating, the “good taste” word. If you call a person or a rule discriminatory, you are talking about unfairness, not about a sharp eye for quality. Everyday Chinese in Taiwan will often just say 歧視的; discriminatory is the English label that sits on laws and reports.
