When thoughts or ideas are disconnected, they do not seem to belong together. One sentence does not grow out of the last; the pieces sit side by side with no clear thread. A tired speaker, a shock, or a poorly planned talk can all come out this way. A teacher may say a paragraph is disconnected when the ideas jump. In everyday talk people also say all over the place, or that something does not hang together. Though actually, the same spelling is used for a phone or a plug that is not joined — but that is not this sense. Here the missing join is in the thinking, not in a wire. The picture is still the same: the joining piece is gone.
