To discolour is to change colour in an way, or to make something else do that. Metal discolours in the rain. A discolours the skin. Tea can discolour a cup. It is not simply “change colour.” A tree turning red in autumn is not discoloring; the word carries the idea that the new colour is a spoiling. British spelling keeps the ou; American spelling drops the u (discolor). In Taiwan school English you will usually see this British form. Though actually, the verb can be used two ways: the cloth discoloured (it happened by itself), or the bleach discoloured the cloth (something did it).
