Disbelieving describes a person, a look, or a voice that is not accepting what they see or hear. A disbelieving stare, a disbelieving laugh: the face is doing the work. The meaning is still ‘not believing,’ but we use this -ing form like an adjective for the moment, not as a stiff substitute for the verb. Though actually, ‘I am disbelieving you’ is not how people talk — that sounds like a machine. We say I don’t believe you, and we keep disbelieving for the look and the tone. It is common in stories and news; less common as a word students need in their own mouths every day.
