A dioxide is a chemical substance made of two oxygen atoms joined to one atom of another element. You name it by the other element: carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the gas we breathe out and that plants take in; sulphur dioxide is a sharp gas from burning some fuels; silicon dioxide is the main stuff in sand and glass. The word belongs to chemistry class, but carbon dioxide itself is everyday — it is in fizzy drinks and in talk about the planet’s weather. Though actually, dioxide is a naming pattern, not one single chemical. If you only remember CO₂, you have the most famous one, not the whole set. The di- just counts the oxygens.
組成di- (“two”) + oxide (a compound with oxygen). Oxide itself is from oxygen.
