A dinette is a small place to eat, almost always in the kitchen or just beside it — a table and a few chairs, not a proper dining room with a door and a long table. American homes and apartment ads use this word a lot: if the kitchen has a corner for meals, that corner is the dinette. You also hear dinette set for the matching table-and-chairs group you buy together. It is ordinary, a bit old-fashioned, and very American; British speakers more often say kitchen table, breakfast bar, or eating area. It is not a restaurant and it is not fancy. Though actually, estate agents like it because it makes a tiny kitchen sound as if it has a dining room of its own.
