A dimmer is the switch — often a round or a slider — that lets you make a lamp brighter or darker without turning it fully off. People also say dimmer switch. You turn it one way and the room grows soft; the other way and the light comes up. Homes, theatres, and restaurants use them so the same bulb can feel gentle or sharp. The same spelling is also the ordinary comparative of dim: This room is dimmer than the kitchen. Same letters, two jobs: one is a thing on the wall, the other just means “more dim”.
