    If someone is diligent, they work hard and they are careful. They finish things properly and they do not skip steps. It is a compliment, a little formal, very common in school reports and job talk. It is about how you work, not how clever you are: a diligent student may still find the work hard, but they keep at it. Though actually, busy is not the same thing. You can be busy and messy. Diligent adds care and thoroughness. It describes a person or their work: a diligent nurse, diligent research. It does not mean they love the task — only that they treat it with care.

組成From Latin dīligēns (“careful, attentive”), the “-ing” form of dīligō (“to love, to esteem,” literally “to choose apart”), from dī-/dis- (“apart”) + legō (“to choose”). That “choose” piece is the same Latin root you meet in elect and select.
