A dilatory student leaves the essay until midnight. A dilatory office sits on a decision for months. It is a formal, slightly word; ordinary English says slow to act, or they keep putting it off. It looks a little like , and it sounds a little like delay, but it does not come from either. It comes from a Latin verb meaning to put off, to carry a thing apart in time.
