To defer something is to put it off until a later time. You do not cancel it; you move the date. A school may defer your start by a year. A court may defer a decision. A payment can be deferred — you pay later, not now. It is a fairly formal word. In everyday talk people more often say delay, postpone, or put off. You will meet it in official letters, universities, and offices. Though actually, the same spelling hides a second verb: to defer to someone, meaning you let their view win because you respect them. That other defer comes from a different Latin verb. This entry is the 'put it off' one.

組成Originally a variant of differ, from Middle English differren (to postpone), from Old French differer, from Latin differō (to carry apart, to delay). Doublet of differ: they split from the same Latin verb. (A second English verb spelled defer, to yield to someone's judgement, comes from Latin dēferō.)
