Diaphanous cloth is so thin and light that you can almost see through it. Light passes through; the shape behind it is only there. Writers use it for curtains, dresses, insect wings, and sometimes mist. It is a , slightly dressy word — you will not hear it much in a shop. Though actually, it is not the same as cheap see-through, and it is not the word for glass. Glass is transparent. Diaphanous is about something soft that lets light through without quite disappearing. A diaphanous curtain still hangs there; it just does not block the morning.
