In Roman stories, Diana is the goddess of hunting and of the moon. She is imagined as a young woman with a bow, moving through the woods with deer and dogs, who does not marry. The Greeks told almost the same story under the name ; the Romans took that figure and called her Diana. She is also tied to wild places, to light, and to women living outside ordinary family life. Artists often give her a small crescent moon and a bow, so you can pick her out in a painting. Though actually, many students meet the name first as a woman’s name — most Princess Diana — which is the same name living on, not a second goddess. In this entry, we mean the Roman goddess.
組成From Late Latin Diāna, a short form of Latin Dīāna, from older Dīvāna: dīvus (“god, divine”) + -āna. She began as an old Italic goddess of light and the moon, and was later treated as the Roman match for Greek Artemis.
