A straight line that goes in a slanted direction — not straight up-down and not straight side-to-side — like the line from one corner of a square to the opposite corner. It's also used as a describing word: "a diagonal line" or "a diagonal stripe." People also use it more loosely for movement, like walking diagonally across a field instead of going straight.
