An adjective for something that leaves the accepted path in a way people treat as wrong, or at least worrying: deviant behaviour, a deviant opinion. In a sociology book it can be fairly cool and technical — just “not the norm.” In the street it can sting; calling a person a deviant is harsh, and kind speakers usually avoid that label unless they are quoting a textbook.
