Detroit is a city in the US state of Michigan. For much of the last century it was the heart of American car-making: Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler all grew up there, so people still call it the Motor City. Though actually the name is older than the factories. French named it from détroit, “strait” — a narrow stretch of water — because of the Detroit River (Rivière du Détroit). The river is a strait linking two lakes, even if visitors today think of cars, music, and a hard-working industrial past, not of water. Say in Detroit, not “in the Detroit”.
