To detonate is to explode, or to make something explode — a bomb, a mine, , explosives in rock. It works two ways. The bomb detonated means it went off. They detonated the bomb means someone made it go off. It is the word for a sudden, violent blast with explosives, in news, mining, and war stories. People sometimes stretch it: a remark that detonates a row, meaning it suddenly starts trouble. Though actually, that stretched use is more newspaper than everyday talk, and it is not a casual way to say someone exploded with anger. Keep it close to a real blast unless the writing is clearly playing with the picture.
組成First used in English in 1729. From Latin dētonō: dē- (off, from) + tonō (to thunder). The old meaning was to thunder down; later it shifted — a huge noise, then explode. The exploding sense is a later development, not the original Latin picture.
