Determinism is the belief that what you do and what happens to you are caused by things you cannot control — the past, your genes, the laws of physics — so “free choice” may be less free than it feels. It is a philosophy and science word, not café chat. Though actually, people also stretch it: “economic determinism” is the idea that money and class decide almost everything. Someone can believe in determinism and still feel very determined to try; the two ideas only look related. The matching adjective is deterministic: a deterministic system is one where, if you know the start, the next step is already fixed.
