1. 1

A determinant is something that strongly shapes what you do, how you behave, or how things turn out. Income can be a determinant of health. Sleep can be a determinant of how well you do in an exam. Researchers like this word; everyday English would say “a big factor” or “something that decides it.” It sounds formal — you meet it in school, news about society, and reports. Though actually, in maths the same spelling means a special number you get from a matrix. That is a different use, and not the one about life and behaviour. This entry is the “what strongly influences you” sense.
