Destructive means causing real damage to people, things, or even to a plan or a relationship. A typhoon can be destructive; so can a comment, a habit, or a way of fighting at home. The word is a bit strong and a bit formal — we reach for it when the harm is serious, not when a child has only made a mess. Scientists also talk about destructive tests, where they break a thing on purpose to see how strong it was. Though actually, people sometimes use it loosely for anything they dislike (“that idea is destructive”) when they mainly mean “I think it is a bad idea”.
