A dermatologist is a doctor whose special job is the skin — and, in real hospitals, often hair and nails as well. You go to this person when a rash will not leave, acne is leaving marks, a mole has changed, or a skin disease needs treatment. The word is formal; skin doctor is also fine in easy English. Though actually, this is not a beauty-salon job, and it is not the same as a plastic surgeon. A dermatologist trains as a medical doctor first, then chooses skin. Some also do cosmetic work later, so can make the word sound like a beauty clinic, but the core training is still medicine.
