The derivation of something is where it came from, and how it turned into what it is now. People use this a lot with words. The derivation of a word is its origin story: which older word it grew from, and how the shape or the meaning changed on the way. You can also talk about the derivation of an idea, a custom, or a later form of a thing. In maths, a derivation is the chain of steps from what you already know to a new result — the working, not only the answer. It is a school-and-book word. Friends would just say where it comes from. Though actually, in higher maths the thing you get when you change a formula is a derivative, not a derivation, and those two get swapped a lot.
組成From Middle English derivacioun, borrowed from Middle French dérivation, from Latin dērīvātiō. Built in English as derive + -ation (the act or the result).
