    A derivative is something that comes from, or is based on, something else that came before it, rather than being fully original. As an adjective, calling a movie, song, or piece of art "derivative" is usually a criticism — it means it copies or closely other work instead of bringing something new. In finance, "a derivative" has a very specific, technical meaning: a financial contract whose value depends on (is derived from) the value of something else, like a stock or a currency — that use is mostly for economics students and isn't the everyday meaning.
