1. 1

Derby is a city in the middle of England, in the county of . People know it for making things — engines, railway work, and fine china. You say it “DAR-bee,” not “DER-bee.” Though actually, the name has travelled: a famous horse race was named after an Earl of Derby, and later a small-d “derby” came to mean a big local sports match. Those are other stories. The city itself is older. Its name comes from a Norse name meaning something like “deer village.”
