If someone is deranged, they are acting in a wild, mixed-up, or dangerous way, and people usually mean the person’s mind is very . It is a strong, rather old-fashioned word. Doctors today almost never write it on a file; they use careful medical names. News and films still use it, often too loosely, as if it just meant “crazy” or “evil.” Though actually, that loose use can hurt, because it paints illness as danger. There is also an older, quieter use — “thrown out of order,” like a deranged — but when the word is about a person, this is the meaning you are meeting.
