Depressingly means “in a way that makes you feel low.” We put it in front of an adjective a lot: depressingly familiar, depressingly small, depressingly true. It does not have to mean a deep medical sadness. Often it is a sigh — “oh, this again, and it feels a bit hopeless.” You can use it in speech when you complain, and in writing when you want that grey, tired colour on a fact. Though actually, it comments on how the thing lands on your feelings; it does not say the thing itself is evil or broken, only that it pulls the mood down.
