To deprecate something is to push it away with words: you say it is a bad idea, you do not want it, you wish people would stop. It is cooler and more formal than “hate.” A teacher may deprecate phones in class; a writer may deprecate a cheap trick in an argument. Though actually, the word has a second, very common life in computers: when programmers deprecate a tool or a piece of code, they are warning you it is old and on the way out — not always calling it wicked, just “please stop using this.” There is also a softer cousin: when people self-deprecate, they make small jokes about themselves. That is not the same as attacking someone else. Students (and even fluent speakers) mix deprecate with depreciate, which is about money and value going down.

組成From Latin dē- (“off”) + precor (“to pray”), with the English verb ending -ate. The old idea was “to pray something away” — to ask that a bad thing not happen.
