1. 1

Deification is the act of treating a person or a thing as if they were a god — or with a respect so high it looks like worship. Fans can slide into the deification of a star; a country can fall into the deification of a leader. The word is formal, a little , and often slightly critical: the speaker usually thinks the praise has gone too far. In older religion it also names making someone a god (emperors, heroes). In Christian teaching it has a special, careful sense — humans sharing in the life of God (Latin deificātiō used for Greek theosis) — which is not the same as loosely "worshipping a celebrity," though actually students meet the celebrity sense far more often in ordinary English. It is a noun: it names the treating, not the person being treated.
