核心畫面

A step on a ladder. A degree is one notch on a scale that runs from low to high — and that single 'step on a scale' picture spreads to temperature, to angles, to how much of something there is, and even to a university qualification (a step you climb to).

From Latin gradus 'a step', via Old French degré 'a step, rung'; the modern senses all trace back to 'one step on a graded scale'.
