Deforestation is the cutting or burning away of a forest, so the land is no longer covered in trees — or the name for that process as it happens across a region. It is the noun that matches the verb . Reports use it for the Amazon, for Southeast Asia, for anywhere woods are cleared for farms, palm oil, cattle, mines, or cities. Though actually, writers stretch it: a photo of one cleared hill may be called deforestation, and so may a decades-long national trend. The feeling is almost always bad in modern news — lost animals, more carbon in the air, soil that washes away — even though people have cleared woods for farms for thousands of years. It is a formal, school-and-news word. In casual talk someone might just say they cut down the trees. First written in this form in 1870; the pieces are older.
