This is the past form of 'deflect.' It means to make something change direction, usually by hitting or blocking it, like a shield deflecting an arrow, or a goalkeeper deflecting a ball away from the goal. It is also used when someone avoids a hard question by changing the subject instead of really answering it - we say they 'deflected' the question.
