In money talk, deflation is when the money side of a country shrinks, so prices fall, or stop going up. Shops have to charge less; pay may fall too. People sometimes wait to buy, because they think things will be cheaper later — and that waiting can make the fall worse. News and economics class use this word. It is the opposite of inflation, when prices keep rising. The picture behind it is air going out of something, but in this sense we are not talking about a tyre; economists borrowed that picture for a whole country’s prices. Ordinary talk in Taiwan usually says 通縮. Careful users mean a general fall in prices, not one shop’s cheap sale.
