To defecate is to push waste out of the bowel — the long tube in the body that carries leftover food out. Doctors, nurses, and science writing use this word. Ordinary people almost never say it at the table or with friends. A child or a parent will say poo, poop, or go to the toilet. If you use defecate in everyday talk, it sounds cold and medical, as if you are reading a hospital form. It is a polite, clinical word for a private body act, not a rude one — but it is still the wrong register for casual speech.

組成Borrowed from Latin dēfaecātus, from the verb dēfaecō. The same Latin family gives faeces, the waste itself. The English ending -ate makes it a verb. Cognate with French déféquer.
