A deejay is a disc jockey: the person who chooses and plays recorded music, and often talks between tracks, on the radio or in a club. People nearly always write DJ; deejay is simply those two letters spelled the way they sound. You can also use it as a verb: to deejay a party is to be the one on the decks. It feels informal, and a little showy — posters, magazines, and music talk like it. Though actually the job has split more than the old name suggests. A radio deejay talks, plays songs, and keeps company with listeners; a club deejay mixes tracks for a dance floor. Neither is just “the person who puts a record on.” The older full phrase disc jockey still exists, but younger speakers mostly say DJ.
